Harnessing Asia’s economic boom for Australia’s benefit
Tuesday 11 March 2014
Australian High Commissioner to Singapore Philip Green is in Australia this week with senior representatives from Austrade and AustCham in Singapore to talk to Australian corporates on how they can take better advantage of Singapore’s emergence as a major centre for global wealth and regional business.
The familiar story of Singapore as a successful and prosperous city state is accurate, but it’s yesterday’s news. What is more significant from Australia’s perspective is Singapore’s emergence as a major global financial centre (second only to Switzerland for private wealth management) and as a key node through which many regional and global supply chains pass. At the same time, the city state has become a regional hub for multinational corporates – with more than 7,000 MNCs now operating out of Singapore.
Mr Green has been joined on the week-long roadshow by Australia's Senior Trade Commissioner in Singapore, Chris Rees, and the President of AustCham Singapore, Guy Scott, for a series of presentations designed to be a ‘how to’ guide on harnessing Singapore and Asia’s growth for the benefit of Australian business. A form of economic diplomacy, focused on growing knowledge and promoting prosperity.
On Monday the group was in Sydney for the first of the 10 events taking place in five cities across five days. On Tuesday the group headed to Melbourne, followed by Brisbane, Darwin and then finally Perth on Friday. The initiative is being supported by AsiaLink and Pitcher Partners.
Australian newspapers the Sydney Morning Herald and the The Australian ran stories covering the roadshow and the opportunities that exist for Australian businesses. Please see below.
