What started in Sydney in 2007 is now a truly global event, and Singapore was the centrepiece of Earth Hour 2014, with the help from some Hollywood movie stars.

The lights went out across the Singapore skyline on Saturday evening between 8:30-9:30pm as Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast members Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx were joined by thousands of Singaporeans to celebrate the world's largest annual voluntary action for the environment at The Float@Marina Bay.

It all started on March 31 2007, when WWF-Australia inspired more than 2.2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses in Sydney to turn their lights out for one hour in the first Earth Hour event.

This year was the biggest Earth Hour in history, with the event observed in over 162 countries and over 7000 cities. The symbolic hour has grown into the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, with beyond the hour activities and initiatives happening throughout the year.

“It’s always extraordinary to see cities and landmarks involved in the ‘lights off event’, but the most exciting thing about Earth Hour this is year, is seeing the amount of projects and campaigns that are taking action beyond the hour. From crowdfunding to campaigns to protect The Great Barrier Reef or The Amazon, Earth Hour is harnessing the power of the crowd far beyond the hour”, said Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour.
