75th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore Commemoration Ceremony

75th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore Commemoration Ceremony

75 years ago, on 15 February 1942, Malaya Command surrendered Singapore to the Japanese 25th Army. This was a significant event in Singapore’s history and a key factor that would later set Singapore firmly on the path towards independence.

The planning for a commemoration ceremony was undertaken by a Commemoration Committee, made up of representatives from Singapore and the Embassy/High Commissions of Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Malaysia New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In the morning of 15 February 2017, a small commemoration ceremony took place at Sarimbun Beach, and in the afternoon a commemoration ceremony took place at Kranji War Cemetery. In attendance was Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, Ambassadors, High Commissioners, including High Commissioner Bruce Gosper, and other dignitaries including Member of Parliament Mr Vikram Nair.
